Oakland University, or OU for short, is a public university, with the campus located partly in Rochester Hills and partly in Auburn Hills, in the US state of Michigan, its official hometown being Rochester, in 2003, an agreement between OU and the city officials being signed, in order to officially recognize the relationship between Rochester and the university. Even the people who live Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills refer to themselves as living in Rochester, the majority of them using Rochester as their mailing address.
Oakland University was founded in 1957, thanks to the 1500-acre land donation made by Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automobile magnate John Francis Dodge, and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, first starting as Michigan State University–Oakland, adopting its current name in 1963. Today, the university offers its students more than 120 baccalaureate degree programs and approximately 100 professional certificate and graduate degree programs, the main academic units on campus being the School of Business Administration, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Health & Human Services, the School of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing.
The athletic teams from OU are known as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, who compete in 16 sports in The Summit League and Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, including in basketball, baseball, golf, soccer and tennis. The Golden Grizzlies have experienced victory many times in the past years, in many of their sports, winning 10 national NCAA Division II titles, the men’s swimming and diving team winning five championships and finishing as runner-up 10 times, the men’s soccer team also contributing to OU’s athletic fame, being NCAA Division II runner-up in 1986, 1994, and 1996.
The list of notable OU alumni contains resonant names such as: Steve Blackwood – actor, Days of our Lives, David Hasselhoff – actor, Howard Birndorf – founder and CEO, Nanogen, Inc., Maximiliano Larroquette – designer of Chevrolet Volt, Kelly Williams – professional basketball player, Justin McCarthy – Admiral, U.S. Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Michael W.
